ANNUAL REPORT

Of the General Committee of Lodge Asoka No.93

For the period 2003-2004

Having met at the invitation of Bro P Srinivasan at Alumni Club, Boat Club Road, Chennai-28 on 03.02.2004, the General Committe of the Lodge has pleasure in presenting the Report for the period 2003-2004 and audited Statement of Accounts for the year ended 31.12.2003.

Membership: The period under review commenced with a membership of 78 and closed with a membership of 68 on the Rolls of the Lodge after providing for 1 Initiation (Bro V Balakrishnan), 5 Resignations (W Bro K Ramesh Chabria, Bro Girish Chabria, Bro G Viswanathan, W Bro S Sharath Babu, Bro Markand Desai) and 6 Cessations (Bro K Fatechand, Bro S A Kharche, Bro K Ramasubramaniam, Bro R Raman, Bro K Sudarshan & Bro S Vijaykishore).

Labour: During the period under review there were 12 Regular Meetings of the Lodge. There was 1 Initiation  (Bro V Balakrishnan), 2 Passings (Bro Capt B. Anantharaman and Bro V. Balakrishnan) and 1 Raising (Capt B Anantharaman).

Attendance: The average attendance of members at Meetings was 17 of whom 10 were Past Masters. The Installation Meeting was attended by a large number of distinguished visiting Brethren.

Ritual Working Competition: The Lodge participated in the First Stage of the Ritual Working Competition 2003-04 at its Regular Meeting held by dispensation on 29.07.2003. While the Lodge was not selected to progress to the Second Stage of the Competition, the announcement of award of Certificates of Merit, if any, is awaited.

Masonic Lectures: The Lodge tradition of Masonic Lectures at Festive Boards was continued for the benefit of Brethren. The Committee is thankful to Past Masters and Brethren who came forward with brief lectures of Masonic interest.

Lodge Newsletter: Responding to the need expressed by Brethren, a Lodge Newsletter The Asoka Times is published on monthly basis from March 2002. The Editorial Committee for the Newsletter comprises of members and ladies. It is significant to note that the ladies and children of members contribute articles of interest to the families. An individual member sponsors every issue. The Asoka Times is posted to members along with the Summons.

Masonic Charitable Projects and Benevolence: The Committee is pleased to report that the Lodge Asoka Audio Library for the Sightless which was inaugurated as a part of the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of the Lodge during 1991 as an ongoing project is functioning satisfactorily with recorded lessons available on cassette tapes for the use of sightless students in Chennai city. The Committee is thankful to W Bro Major Dr Prof  S Srinivasan who has been supervising the project since its inception. There has been no additional requirement of cassette tapes.

Charity Project

Distribution of Notebooks and pens and Dhanya Dhaan at Corporation School, VP Koil Street, Mylapore, Chennai-4 Rs.15,450.00

The Committee feels privileged to record that charitable disbursements as above totalling to Rs.51,225.00 have been made during the year. The Committee records with pleasure that the deserving students receiving scholarships from Lodge Asoka are top-rankers in their respective classes/courses. 

The Committee thanks Brethren who have come forward to support the various charitable activities of the Lodge with generous contributions and places on record its gratitude to W.Bro A.Suryanarayana Rao of Jawahar Vidyalaya for donating Rs.6,000 which was passed on to Mr S Elangovan as scholarship and to Bro S Srikanth for donating Rs.6,000 which was passed on to Kum. V Kavitha. The Committee also records with pleasure that The Regional Grand Lodge of Southern India Charitable Trust favoured our Lodges recommendation with a scholarship of Rs.5,000 to Mr S Elangovan.

The Lodge conducted a Charity Project at the Corporation High School, VP Koil Street, Mylapore, Chennai-4 on 13.01.2004 (on the eve of Bhogi). Notebooks and pens were distributed to the 600 students of the school. Refreshments were arranged by the Lodge and served by the Ladies present to the children, staff and members present.

Masonic Honours: (a)            The Committee is pleased to record that the Grand Lodge of India and the Regional Grand Lodge of Southern India have been pleased to honour the following Brethren of this Lodge with conferment of Masonic Ranks and promotions as under:

Regional Grand Ranks 2004-05 (Conferred at RGL Annual Meet, Thiruvananthapuram in January/February 2004) : Communication from RGL of SI is yet to be received.

(b)        W Bro S B S Raman has been nominated Editor of Masonsouth, the Newsletter of the Regional Grand Lodge of Southern India.

Fellowship: All meetings were followed by fellowship and dinner after the meeting. The Committee thanks the Brethren who came forward to host the dinners.

Committee Meetings: There were 12 Meetings of the General Committee. The fellowship / dinner after the meetings was hosted by Committee Members when convenient. The Lodge practice of inviting donations to the Committee Meeting Charity Box was continued for the sixth year in succession. When opened on 03.02.2004, the Committee Meeting Charity Box of this year was found to have collected Rs.5130. It is proposed to continue the practice in the ensuing year.

Returns and Dues: All returns to be submitted to the Grand Lodge of India and to the Regional Grand Lodge of Southern India have been submitted and all dues paid well in time. Contributory charges due to the Madras Freemasons Hall Trust have also been paid with no dues owing from the Lodge.

Awards: The Committee is happy to announce the winners of the following Lodge Prizes/ Trophies:

1.         Ashok Mohan Chabria Prize for the best Ritualist among Master Masons in the Lodge holding Principal or Assistant Offices: Bro V.K.Raj Tilak

2.         PCM Somasundaram Prize for the best Ritualist among Master Masons in the Lodge not holding Principal or Assistant Offices: Bro Dr.S.Jai Prakash

3.         KR Kothandaraman Prize for the best delivery of an allotted portion of the Ritual Working in a competition held for Master Masons in the Lodge (This years portion: Third Degree Further Entrustment): Bro P.Srinivasan    

4.         SBS Raman Mementos for the Ruling Master and Past Masters in the Lodge  who have attended 100% of meetings during the year: W Bro S Sargunar

5.         Swami Mahadevan Prize for Master Masons in the Lodge who have attended 100% of meetings during the year: Bro. S.Srikanth

6.            Amritlal Bagga Trophy for a most loveable member within and without the Lodge : W Bro Lalit Nangia             

7.            Basantlal Bagga Trophy for the best essay by a member on an assigned Masonic subject (This years topic: Symbolism of the North East Charge):                          Nil

8.         Capt J Laxminarayanan Trophy for the most promising Mason who has demonstrated marked improvement during the year: Bro. Nitin Shroff

Recommendations

1.         The Committee records its appreciation of the sincere manner in which the following officers of the Lodge have discharged their duties during the period under review and recommends that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to them:

2.         The Committee recommends that the Lodge vote that a Past Master's Jewel be presented to W Bro S Venkatakrishna for his services to the Lodge during his Mastership.

3.         The Committee records its appreciation of the unfailing services to the Lodge by V W Bro N Pandurangan as Tyler since 1970 (for 33 years) who has expressed his inability to continue. The Committee recommends that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to V W Bro N Pandurangan.

4.         The Committee thanks the Editorial Committee and those responsible for the publication of The Asoka Times including the sponsors of the monthly issues and recommends that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to them.

5.         The Committee recommends that the Lodge vote for the disbursement of the following contributions totalling to Rs.39,500.00 from out of the various Lodge funds:

In Conclusion: At the Regular (Election) Meeting held on 24.01.2004, Bro Parthasarathy Srinivasan, the Senior Warden was unanimously elected to preside over the Lodge as Worshipful Master during 2004-2005. The Committee has great pleasure in wishing him and his officers well in taking the Lodge to greater heights.

The Committee places on record its gratitude to M W the Grand Master and his Officers and R W the Regional Grand Master and his Officers, and their respective Secretariats for their solicitude in the welfare of this Lodge.

The Committee is pleased to report that amity and cordiality prevails amongst the Brethren of this Lodge and between this Lodge and other Lodges in the Region.
